Sleeping with Destiny

A play by Coni Ciongoli-Koepkinger.

Universal Park, a standard setting for "acceptable" outdoor interaction amongst the breeders. Three young, pregnant women, Destiny, Anna, and Clara sit comfortably on a bench in a casual tete-a-tete while Simon, a very tall man in black, wanders about unnoticed. A blaring "VOICE" bellows out commands periodically. Anna and Clara are familiar with the procedures here. Anna questions whether or not Destiny has the endowment to make it through basic training. They have been successful carriers a number of times, but this is Destiny's first incarnation in the New World Society. As a first timer, she still has perceptual resonances to the "MWW", the "Memory of What Was". Thus she has left a channel to the past open and offered a psychic cord for Simon, her former lover, to climb back into their now placid world without men. Or are they men masking as women? Supposedly men have been selectively out-bred to an orchestrated extinction. Whatever it is, the society now is highly organized and tightly controlled. books, magazines, or any form of the written word has long been forbidden as well as any form of human union. The theory is that humans have become a very volatile species and when two individuals become physically close enough to touch, skin-to-skin, the heat of their suppressed passions will cause spontaneous combustion immediately upon contact. The new physics has proven that the manifestation of love through the interaction between corporeal bodies can only weaken and deform the vital unit thus weakening the species as a whole. Yet Simon has been assigned the mission to return to this reality by reconnecting with Destiny, who was his former bride beloved, lost during childbirth. He has been re-establishing contact with her in her dreamstate and has now created a strong enough mental thread to physically manifest. His choice is most unusual, but his will to reignite the spark of divine love to the new human race is most promising and admirable. ....*END
