THE SHADOWDANCER

A play by Coni Ciongoli-Koepkinger.

Time: The Year 2112
Act I - New York City
Act II - Sedona,Arizona

The Shadow Dancer illumines the dark side of mortal existence; it let's us feel just how low mankind can sink before he transforms back into the light source from which he was born. It is the story of three artists, Jonathan, Sharon and Carl, who each live in three completely different worlds. Yet, they all share the same desperation due to suffucation of their creative endeavors. Jonathan Taylor was once a very prosperous oil painter, the darling of society and the prodigy of the New York University scene. He now lives in dire striates, drinking heavily amongst the company of addicts, thieves and prostitutes. Fr. Carl Rogers is a priest, a choral composer, who seems to sense the undying passion of the divine spirit being snuffed out of every pure human left on earth. Since most churches are closed, he lives in the memory of celebrating his Catholic faith. He is a gentle man with an unmistakable humbleness. Still, there is an intensity in his voice that could tame the wildest of beasts. Sharon Silverman, the third leg of the triangle, has poured her very heart and soul onto the Broadway stage. She gave up chances at marriage, children, wealth, and security all to procure a life in the theatre that is now chewing her to pieces. She has remained a faithful wife to the stage though it constantly lets her down. Depressed about the recent death of live theatre, Sharon is about to commit suicide during an ice storm on the Brooklyn Bridge. Fr. Carl and Jonathan, who happen to be passing in opposite directions, stop, and save her life. The mystical connection they share endows them with graces beyond their wildest dreams. It takes them from the height of artistic success in NYC to a search to find the "Ultimate Truth" in the Arizona desert. There they experience the reality that shines beyond time and forever without a shadow. For here these artists break through the illusion of life, and learn the wisdom of the ages whispered to them by the winds of stillness: "Every man that walks in the darkness of his past remains nothing but a shadow of his former self." New light is shed on us all, and the artists are once again able to shine their creative reflections into the pool of humanity, offering hope for a brighter future.
